Tesla vehicles have become one of the most frequent requests in professional detailing shops. The combination of a brand-loyal owner demographic that cares about their cars, paint quality issues that make protection especially valuable, and rapid market penetration means most active shops are seeing multiple Teslas per month. Knowing what's different before you start is how you avoid problems.
Tesla's paint — specifically on Model 3 and Model Y — is notoriously soft compared to most production vehicles. It swirls extremely easily, and it polishes quickly during correction (good) but can be over-polished just as fast (bad). Clients often bring their Tesla in with heavy swirling from automated car washes or even improper hand washing. The paint didn't start swirled — it got there fast because of how easily the clear coat scratches.
Any correction work on Tesla paint: start conservative. Test spot with a finishing polish before reaching for compound. On white paint especially, M205 on a medium foam pad often accomplishes what you'd need compound for on harder European paint. Don't overshoot.
Note: Model S and X tend to have harder, better-quality clear coats than the Model 3/Y. Don't assume all Tesla paint behaves the same. Assess each vehicle with a test spot.
Pearl White Multi-Coat: most common Tesla color. Forgiving for hiding swirls day-to-day but still scratches easily. Fingerprints and fine marks visible up close.
Midnight Black: the most demanding Tesla color. Shows every contact scratch and swirl. Extremely high demand for PPF and coating on black Teslas.
Deep Blue Metallic and Red Multi-Coat: similar swirl visibility issues to black, though metallic flake in blue hides some defects.
Model 3 and Y feature large panoramic glass roofs. Clean with ammonia-free glass cleaner applied to a microfiber, not directly to the glass. Be careful working around the roof's rubber gasket — the seal channels trap product and water if not thoroughly dried after cleaning.
Tesla's Autopilot system relies on cameras mounted in the B-pillars, rear, mirrors, and front. Treat camera lens surfaces as you would any optical surface — damp microfiber with glass cleaner, gentle wipe. Do not apply wax, sealant, or ceramic coating to camera lens housings — it interferes with the optics. Mask camera positions during protection application on surrounding panels. A dirty or coated Autopilot camera that triggers a system warning after your detail is a client complaint waiting to happen.
The large center touchscreen is the primary interface for everything in the car. Use a microfiber and screen-safe cleaner or distilled water. Do not apply APC or interior cleaner to the screen. Do not use a dry microfiber that might drag particles across the oleophobic coating. The screen coating behaves like a phone screen — it can be abraded with the wrong product or technique. Same applies to the instrument cluster screen and rear seat screens on S/X.
Tesla-specific high-impact areas for PPF: • Front bumper: road debris impact, especially at highway speed on Model 3's low front bumper • Hood leading edge • Door handles: touch-activated flush handles on Model 3/Y are constant fingernail and ring abrasion points • Frunk lid: high-touch surface from loading/unloading • Rocker panels: road debris and boot scuff accumulate quickly
Full front-end PPF (bumper, hood, A-pillars, mirrors) is the most common Tesla protection package. Many owners elect full vehicle PPF given the paint softness and high cost of factory paint repair.
Tesla's large flat panel surfaces are straightforward to coat. Specific considerations: • Mask the charging port before coating the surrounding area • The frunk interior is painted — coat it like any other panel • The large glass roof benefits from a glass-specific ceramic coating (Gyeon Q2 Glass, CarPro FlyBy Forte) — it's one of the most UV-exposed surfaces on the car
Tesla owners are tech-forward, brand-conscious, and research their service providers carefully. A well-executed Tesla detail with PPF or coating generates photos that perform well on Instagram, and satisfied Tesla clients refer other Tesla owners actively. Building a reputation for quality Tesla work within that community is worth the effort of knowing the specifics. Word-of-mouth in that owner network is fast and loyal.
